PUVeP is assisting the KKP Office of Xavier University (which stands for “Kristohanong Katilingban sa Pagpakabana” or "Christian Community for Social Awareness") in implementing four UDD toilets in various barangay Lumbia communities, Cagayan de Oro City. Funding for two toilets comes from the German Embassy, namely for the Baluarte Elementary School and the Centro Elementary School, while the third and fourth toilets, which will be established sitio Palalan, are funded by the pokerstars bonus code and the Child Fund Japan (CFJ).

Lumbia is best known for the Cagayan de Oro Airport, which is located in this barangay. However, one of the major constraints in this urban agriculture area are the limited resources of and access to fresh water. These amenities will help lessen the burden on the local inhabitants and improve hygiene due to better sanitation.

Lumbia Airport takes its name from its location in Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City. It serves as a minor air base of the Philippine Air Force, with service equipment of OV-10 Bronco aircraft as well as UH-1 Huey and MD-520MG Defender helicopters. It is also set to be replaced by the larger Laguindingan International Airport currently under construction in the Municipality of Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, some 46 kilometers southwest of Cagayan de Oro City.

The social preparation for this project started in March 2007, when Ms. Glenda Y. Sol, PUVeP Ecosan In-Charge, gave lectures on ecological sanitation to 88 participants of KKP's partner organizations LAMBO (Lumbia Aktibong Molihok alang sa Baryohanong Organisasyon), UPPCA (Upper Palalan Parents’ Children Association) and BACPA (Baluarte Child Parents Association).

The residents found the ecosan concept and especially the UDD toilets very convincing. Since most of them are farmers, they were very interested in the reuse of ecosan products. After funding was secured from the German Embassy and the Child Fund Japan (CFJ) the Lumbia barangay council was oriented about the project on September 12, 2007. Shortly after, the construction of the first toilet in sitio Palalan started with an impressive involvement of the local community.

The Baluarte Elementary School has a total of 168 students from grade 1 to 6.

There are only three toilets inside the school compound and water for flushing is very expensive costing 5 PhP per 20 l container. An orientation was given to 50 parents and teachers about the project on October 9, 2007 by Glenda Y. Sol and Stephen O. Lee. The principal was very happy about the project because she is always afraid that the students might be bitten by snakes since most of them practice open defecation at the back of the school building. All UDD toilets in Lumbia are expected to be completed by November 2007.
Also Ms. Glenda Y. Sol, PUVeP Ecosan In-Charge, and Mr. Clarito "Turok" A. Santos Jr., PUVeP Agronomist , will leave the Philippines on October 22, 2007 to take up the 2-years M.Sc. programme Agricultural Sciences in the Tropics and Subtropics at the University of Hohenheim, Germany, with a full scholarship of the German Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD).

We are wishing them all the best for this new endeavor and say with deep gratitude for all their achievements "Auf Wiedersehen" (see you again) in 2009!
